Astaxanthin - what is it?
Astaxanthin belongs to the carotenoids and is a natural colourant which is primarily produced by green algae and is responsible for the red colouring of crustaceans and fish, e.g. salmon, which feed on these algae. Through this food chain, astaxanthin also reaches birds such as flamingos.In the plant world, astaxanthin is the strongest antioxidant known to date. Algae and plants form this carotenoid as UV protection and cell protection.
Astaxanthin from algae
The astaxanthin contained in this food supplement is obtained from a special type of algae: Haematococcus pluvialis, the so-called "blood algae". It is actually a green alga, but under difficult conditions with a lot of sunlight and little food it forms astaxanthin for its protection and thus turns red.
