Beta carotene as Retinol equivalent (RAE)
Beta-carotene is one of the secondary plant substances and is found in all plants that are exposed to light to protect against photo-oxidative processes. It belongs to the group of provitamin A carotenoids because it can be converted into vitamin A in the human organism.
Provitamin A carotenoids such as beta-carotene are subject to interactions with other food ingredients in the body, have different bioavailability and conversion rates into thevitamin A active form retinol.
With the Retinol Activity EquivalentsRAE takes these differences into account. 1 µg RAE corresponds to 1 µg retinol and 12 µg β - carotene.
