Chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus) is a plant species belonging to the mint family (Lamiaceae). The deciduous shrub originates from the Mediterranean region and parts of Western Asia and prefers sunny locations. Its narrow, palmately arranged leaves and violet-blue flowers, which appear in late summer, are particularly distinctive.

The chaste tree owes its unusual name to its long history of use. The plant was already known in ancient times and was later also cultivated in European monastery gardens. Its small, dark-coloured fruits resemble peppercorns in appearance and have a slightly spicy flavour. For this reason, the plant is also occasionally known as monk's pepper.

For the production of herbal preparations, the ripe, dried fruits are primarily used. They contain a variety of natural plant compounds, including iridoid glycosides such as agnuside and aucubin, as well as flavonoids, diterpenes and components of essential oils. The exact composition may vary depending on the origin, harvest time and processing of the fruits.

One distinctive feature of the chaste tree is its traditional use in European herbalism, particularly in connection with the female cycle. The plant and its constituents remain the subject of botanical and pharmacological research. Among other things, the different groups of compounds found in the fruits and their properties are being examined in greater detail.

With a 10:1 chasteberry extract, approximately ten parts of plant material are used to produce one part of extract. Therefore, 25mg chasteberry extract corresponds to an initial quantity of approximately 250mg chaste tree fruits. During extraction, selected constituents are obtained from the plant material and provided in concentrated form.

With its long history, characteristic fruits and diverse profile of plant compounds, Vitex agnus-castus is one of the particularly interesting plants used in traditional European herbalism.
