Cinnamon is one of the oldest known spices in the world and is obtained from the dried bark of various cinnamon trees. Ceylon cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum), which originally comes from Sri Lanka, is particularly valued. In contrast to the widespread Cassia cinnamon, Ceylon cinnamon is characterised by its delicate, mildly sweet aroma and comparatively low natural coumarin content. Cinnamon has been used for centuries both in traditional herbal knowledge and in cooking.
The characteristic properties of cinnamon are due to its natural essential oils and secondary plant compounds. These include cinnamaldehyde, various polyphenols and other aromatic compounds. Cinnamaldehyde is largely responsible for the typical aroma and flavour. The composition of these plant compounds can vary depending on the type of cinnamon, origin and processing.
In food supplements, cinnamon is often used in the form of a concentrated extract. An extract ratio of 10:1 means that approximately 10g of cinnamon bark is used to produce 1g of extract. Therefore, 1,000mg cinnamon extract 10:1 corresponds to a starting quantity of 10,000mg cinnamon. Extraction makes it possible to provide certain plant constituents in concentrated form.
Chromium is a trace element that is required only in small amounts. It contributes to normal macronutrient metabolism and to the maintenance of normal blood glucose levels. Natural sources of chromium include wholegrain products, meat and various vegetables. In food supplements, chromium is often used in the form of chromium picolinate, a compound of chromium and picolinic acid.
Zinc is also an essential trace element and is a component of numerous enzymes in the human body. Among other functions, it contributes to normal carbohydrate metabolism, normal fatty acid metabolism and the protection of cells from oxidative stress. Zinc also contributes to the normal function of the immune system and to the maintenance of normal skin, hair and nails. As the body cannot produce zinc itself, it must be obtained regularly through the diet.
The combination of Ceylon cinnamon extract, zinc and chromium therefore brings together a traditional plant-based ingredient with two essential trace elements. While cinnamon provides natural plant compounds, zinc and chromium complement the formulation with their specific nutritional properties.
