Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is also known as turmeric root, saffron root, or Indian saffron and belongs to the ginger family (Zingiberaceae).
The plant originated in South Asia, but is now often grown in tropical regions.
The root is primarily used, both as a spice and as a coloring agent. It has only been about 50 years since curcuma has also been used in alternative medicine.
Curcuma - Ingredients
The most well-known ingredient of the curcuma root is curcumin. It belongs to the group of curcuminoids, which are considered secondary plant substances. Curcuminoids consist of curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethoxycurcumin, with curcumin making up the largest portion at around 77%.
Other ingredients in turmeric root include essential oils, Vitamin C, Vitamin B1 and B2, iron, potassium, calcium, zinc, magnesium, and sulfur.
Curcuma with Piperine
Curcumin is fat-soluble, which makes it difficult to be absorbed, especially without a meal. To improve bioavailability, this product includes an extract from black pepper, standardized to 95% piperine. Piperine is an alkaloid found in black pepper (Piper nigrum), which gives it its spicy taste. In terms of quantity, it's the most abundant alkaloid in black pepper.
As early as 1979, there were indications that piperine could enhance the bioavailability of other substances.
