Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is also known as turmeric, saffron root or Indian saffron and belongs to the ginger family (Zingiberaceae).
The plant originates in South Asia, but is now often grown in tropical areas.
The root is used primarily, both as a spice and as a dye. Turmeric has only been used in alternative medicine for around 50 years.
Turmeric - ingredients
The best-known ingredient in turmeric root is curcumin. It is one of the so-called curcuminoids, which are secondary plant substances. Curcuminoids are made up of curcumin, demethoxycurcumin and bis-demethoxycurcumin, with curcumin making up the largest proportion at around 77%.
Other ingredients in turmeric root include essential oils and sulphur.
Turmeric with piperine
Curcumin is fat-soluble and is often very difficult to absorb, even when taken with a fatty meal. To improve bioavailability, a black pepper extract has been added to this product, which has been standardized to a content of 95% piperine. Piperine is an alkaloid of black pepper (Piper nigrum), which gives it its spicy taste. In terms of quantity, it is the most abundant alkaloid in black pepper.
As early as 1979, there were initial indications that piperine can increase the bioavailability of other substances.
