The name of club moss (Latin name: Lycopodium) comes from lappo, which in Old German means something like flat hand. The name arose because the tips of the plant's stems look like bear's paws. Club moss spores were already used by shamans in the Stone Age. They put the dried spores in the fire to drive away evil spells with the resulting glowing sparks.
Club moss is a good source of huperzine A, which is an alkaloid.
