Building block of collagen
Proline is one of the non-essential, proteinogenic amino acids. Non-essential amino acids can be synthesized by the body on its own.
Our organism needs L-proline to form proteins, including collagen, which is found primarily in connective tissue and in the skin.
Proline is an important building block for connective tissue. During collagen synthesis, proline is hydroxylated to hydroxyproline. A necessary co-factor for this is vitamin C. Because of this connection, it can be useful to ensure an adequate supply of vitamin C to support this process. Collagen is primarily responsible for providing structure.
Proline in food
Sources of animal origin are considered to be the richest suppliers. The amino acid is found in high proportions in milk and dairy products, meat and fish. Sources of plant origin, on the other hand, contain relatively small amounts of the amino acid. Soybeans, spelt flour and wheat flour (type 1050) are an exception, however, as they contain significant amounts of proline.
Even if the human organism can synthesize the amino acid on its own, targeted additional intake through diet or food supplements can be useful in certain life situations.
Recommended consumption:
Adults take 2 tablets daily, divided between meals, with plenty of water.
