Amino acid from green tea
When we talk about L-theanine, we mean a water-soluble, non-proteinogenic amino acid, which means that theanine is not involved in the construction of proteins in the organism, but still fulfills important functions because it has similarities with the amino acid L-glutamic acid. Various studies indicate that theanine is converted in the body into GABA analogues (gamma-aminobutyric acid).
Elevated concentrations of the amino acid can be found in black, but especially in green tea (Camellia sinensis). The L-theanine content in black tea is lower due to fermentation.
In addition, the characteristic taste of green tea is thanks to the L-theanine.
Theanine was discovered and isolated for the first time in 1949.
