Non-proteinogenic amino acid
When we talk about L-theanine, we mean a water-soluble, non-proteinogenic amino acid, which means that theanine is not involved in the formation of proteins in the organism, but nevertheless fulfils important functions because it has similarities to the amino acid L-glutamic acid. Various studies indicate that theanine is converted in the body into GABA analogues (gamma-aminobutyric acid).
Increased concentrations of the amino acid are found naturally in black tea, but especially in green tea (Camellia sinensis). The L-theanine content in black tea is lower due to fermentation.
The characteristic taste of green tea is also due to L-theanine.
Theanine was discovered and isolated for the first time in 1949.
