Nattokinase is an enzyme originally obtained from the traditional Japanese food natto. Natto consists of fermented soybeans and has been consumed in Japan for centuries. To produce it, cooked soybeans are fermented with the bacterium Bacillus subtilis var. natto. During this natural fermentation process, various metabolic products are formed, including the enzyme nattokinase.

One special characteristic of nattokinase is that it belongs to the group of proteases. These are enzymes capable of breaking down certain protein compounds. Nattokinase is studied scientifically in particular because of its fibrinolytic activity. This refers to the ability to break down the protein fibrin under certain conditions. Fibrin is a natural component of blood clotting and plays an important role in the formation of blood clots. However, enzymatic activity demonstrated in laboratory conditions cannot be directly equated with a corresponding effect in the human body.

The activity of nattokinase is often stated in FU (Fibrinolytic Units). This unit describes fibrinolytic enzyme activity measured under standardised laboratory conditions. Unlike the amount stated in milligrams, the FU value therefore provides information about the measured activity of the enzyme. For example, 100mg nattokinase may have an activity of 2,000 FU. The actual activity depends, among other factors, on the production process, preparation and concentration of the enzyme.

For food supplements, nattokinase is generally produced through the controlled fermentation of soybeans. The enzyme is then obtained from the fermentation product and further processed. Non-genetically modified soybeans (Non-GMO) can also be used as the raw material. Unlike the traditional food natto, standardised nattokinase preparations provide a precisely defined enzyme quantity and activity.

Although nattokinase has already been the subject of various scientific studies, its possible health effects in humans have not yet been conclusively established. In particular, laboratory findings cannot be equated with a proven clinical benefit. There are currently no authorised health claims for nattokinase under the European Health Claims Regulation.

Important: Due to its fibrinolytic properties, particular caution is required with nattokinase. People taking anticoagulant medicines, suffering from bleeding disorders or due to undergo surgery should not use nattokinase without prior medical advice. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, it should also only be taken after consulting a doctor.
