Vitamin K is one of the fat-soluble vitamins and occurs in different forms. The best known include vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) and vitamin K2 (menaquinones). While vitamin K1 is mainly found in green leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale and broccoli, vitamin K2 occurs in fermented foods and certain animal products, among other sources. Both forms belong to the vitamin K family but differ in their chemical structure and natural occurrence.
A special feature of vitamin K2 is that it does not refer to a single compound, but to a group of related substances. These are known as menaquinones and are distinguished according to the length of their side chains. Particularly well known are menaquinone-4 (MK-4) and menaquinone-7 (MK-7). Both share the same basic vitamin K structural component but differ in the length of their chemical side chain.
MK-4 occurs in smaller amounts in foods such as egg yolk, meat and certain dairy products. In addition, it can be formed in the human body from other forms of vitamin K. MK-7, on the other hand, is particularly well known for its occurrence in fermented foods. One of the best-known natural sources is natto, a traditional Japanese food made from fermented soybeans.
In the human body, vitamin K is required for the activation of certain vitamin K-dependent proteins. These proteins play a role in blood clotting and bone metabolism, among other processes. They include clotting factors as well as osteocalcin, a protein found in bone tissue. Vitamin K is therefore involved in a range of physiological processes.
As vitamin K belongs to the fat-soluble vitamins, its absorption differs from that of water-soluble vitamins. Dietary fats and normal fat digestion play an important role in its absorption in the intestine. The individual forms of vitamin K also differ in terms of their absorption, distribution and length of time in the body. MK-4 and MK-7 in particular are being scientifically studied because of these differences.
Vitamin K2 1250µg from Vive Supplements combines the two menaquinone forms MK-4 and MK-7 in one tablet. Each tablet contains a total of 1250µg vitamin K2. The combination brings together two different members of the vitamin K2 family and provides a targeted way to supplement daily vitamin K intake.
